How Do You Configure a Custom Endoscopy Cart for Different Endoscopy Systems?

A cart may look suitable in a photo, but one wrong shelf height, monitor arm, or power layout can create problems after the equipment arrives.

I configure a custom endoscopy cart around the actual equipment first. I check device dimensions, weight, monitor specifications, shelf requirements, power standard, cable routing, accessories, room use, and future expansion before deciding the final cart structure.

Most custom cart projects do not start with a drawing. They start with a photo, an equipment list, or a short message such as, “Can you make a cart for this system?” That is enough to start the discussion, but it is not enough to start production. I need to understand what will actually be installed on the cart.

What Information Do I Need Before Configuring a Custom Endoscopy Cart?

A customer may send me a cart photo and ask for the same configuration. The problem is that I still cannot see what equipment will finally sit on it.

Before I configure a custom endoscopy cart, I normally ask for the equipment brand and model, device dimensions and weight, monitor specifications, required accessories, local power standard, room application, and expected quantity. These details determine the structure much more than the appearance of the cart.

I Start With the Equipment, Not the Cart

The first thing I ask for is an equipment list.

I want to know whether the system includes a video processor, light source, insufflator, suction or irrigation pump, electrosurgical unit, printer, recorder, keyboard, isolation transformer, or other equipment. I then ask for the dimensions and weight of the main devices.

This sounds basic, but it solves many problems before they happen.

A customer once sends only a reference photo, for example, and the easiest response would be to quote the closest standard model. I prefer not to do that immediately. Two systems can look similar in a photo but require very different shelf spacing.

I also ask for photos of the front and rear of the devices when possible. The front tells me how operators use the equipment. The rear tells me much more about cables, connectors, ventilation, and power.

I do not need every detail on the first message. I can start with the available information and identify what is still missing.

How Do I Configure the Shelves and Equipment Positions?

Adding more shelves may look like the safest solution. In practice, too many shelves can make a cart crowded, tall, and difficult to use.

I configure shelf quantity, spacing, depth, and position around the devices that need to be operated most often. I also consider equipment weight, ventilation, cable access, and whether the customer may add or replace devices later.

I Think About How the System Will Be Used

I do not arrange equipment only according to size.

I also consider frequency of use.

If staff need to adjust a processor or light source during a procedure, I do not want that device positioned too low. A heavy device that rarely needs adjustment may be better on a lower shelf. This can improve weight distribution and keep frequently used controls within easier reach.

Ventilation is another detail that is easy to miss.

Some medical devices release heat through the rear or side. I therefore avoid placing equipment too close together simply because the dimensions allow it. I want enough room for cables and airflow as well.

Shelf depth matters too. A device may physically fit on a shelf, but rear connectors can add extra depth. Power plugs and signal cables also need space.

When I plan a custom configuration, I usually think in this order:

This is one reason I prefer configuring a cart from the complete system rather than selling it only by model number.

How Do I Choose the Right Endoscopy Cart Monitor Arm?

A monitor arm may look like a simple accessory. If the arm and monitor do not match, however, the problem becomes obvious as soon as the system is assembled.

I choose an endoscopy cart monitor arm according to monitor weight, screen size, VESA pattern, required movement, viewing position, and whether the customer needs one or two displays. I do not choose an arm by monitor size alone.

Monitor Weight Matters More Than Many Buyers Expect

Customers often tell me only the screen size: 24 inch, 27 inch, or 32 inch.

That is useful, but I still ask for the exact monitor model or at least the monitor weight and VESA pattern.

Two 27-inch monitors can have very different weights. A medical monitor may also be heavier than a normal commercial display. The arm must safely support the actual load and remain stable when the cart moves.

I also ask how the monitor needs to move.

Some customers only need basic left-right adjustment. Others need height adjustment, extension, rotation, or a wider working range. Surgical or integrated systems may require a heavier arm than a simple diagnostic setup.

For a dual-monitor configuration, I also think about balance. Adding a second screen changes the upper weight of the cart, so I cannot treat the monitor arm as an isolated accessory.

I also keep the monitor cables in mind during arm selection. A good arm arrangement should allow the cables to move without being stretched every time the monitor position changes.

How Do I Design Power and Cable Management for the Cart?

A clean cart can quickly become messy after five devices are connected. If I leave power and cable routing until the end, the finished system usually suffers.

I design power and cable management according to the number of devices, plug standard, equipment positions, cable direction, and maintenance needs. For export projects, I also confirm the destination market before selecting the power configuration.

I Look at the Rear of the System Before Finalizing the Layout

The front of an endoscopy cart sells the product. The rear often decides whether the system is pleasant to use.

Processors, light sources, monitors, printers, pumps, and other equipment can create a large number of power and signal cables. If all cables simply hang behind the cart, moving and servicing the system becomes harder.

I therefore look at where each cable comes from and where it needs to go.

I may use a rear cable channel, cable clips, routing holes, hooks, or other fixing points depending on the cart structure. I also try to keep enough access for maintenance. Hiding every cable inside a closed structure may look clean, but it can make servicing more difficult.

Power configuration is especially important for international orders.

I confirm the destination country and required socket type instead of assuming one standard will work everywhere. I also ask how many devices need power so that the power strip is not planned too late.

This is a small part of the cart when viewed in a product photo, but it becomes a major part of the daily user experience.

Can One Custom Endoscopy Cart Work With Olympus, Fujifilm, Pentax, and Other Systems?

It is tempting to call a cart “universal.” I try to avoid that word unless I know exactly what equipment will be installed.

One cart structure can often be adapted for systems using equipment from Olympus, Fujifilm, Pentax, and other manufacturers, but I still verify the individual device dimensions, weight, monitor mounting, cables, accessories, and power requirements before confirming compatibility.

I Check the Device, Not Only the Brand

A brand name alone does not give me enough information.

One manufacturer can have several generations of processors, light sources, monitors, and accessories. Their dimensions can change. Their connectors can change. Their ventilation layout can change.

That means I do not configure an “Olympus cart” or a “Fujifilm cart” only from the logo on the equipment.

I configure the cart around the exact system.

For distributors, this approach is useful because the same basic cart platform may support several projects with relatively small adjustments. Adjustable shelf positions, optional monitor arms, different holders, and flexible cable management can reduce the need to develop a completely new cart each time.

At the same time, I do not force every system into one structure.

If the device combination becomes too large, too heavy, or too different, a new configuration may be the better option.

For me, compatibility means that the complete system has been checked. It does not simply mean that the cart has enough shelves.

When Do I Add Drawers, Doors, or Enclosed Storage?

Storage looks simple until a customer starts deciding what should remain on the cart during daily use. Then drawers, doors, baskets, and open shelves all serve different purposes.

I add drawers, doors, or enclosed storage when the customer needs to organize accessories, protect items, control access, or create a cleaner integrated system. I do not add closed storage automatically because it can also increase weight and reduce equipment access.

Custom Doors Should Solve a Real Problem

Some customers ask for an endoscopy cart with custom doors or an enclosed lower section.

My first question is: what will be stored inside?

If the space is mainly for small accessories, a drawer may be more convenient. If larger items need protection, a cabinet with a door may make more sense. If staff need constant access, an open shelf may still be the better choice.

I also check whether the enclosed space will contain powered equipment.

If it does, ventilation becomes important. I do not want to create a clean-looking enclosure that traps heat around a device.

Doors also need enough room to open. This sounds obvious, but room layout matters. A cart used in a small ENT room may be positioned close to a wall or another device. A wide door can become inconvenient.

I treat doors and storage as part of the workflow, not as decoration.

When Should I Modify a Standard Cart Instead of Developing a New One?

Full customization sounds attractive, but it is not always the best choice. A new structure can add development time and cost without creating enough practical value.

I modify an existing cart when the main structure already fits the project and only shelf positions, monitor arms, holders, power, color, or accessories need to change. I consider a new design when the equipment layout or structural requirements are significantly different.

I Prefer the Simplest Solution That Actually Works

This is an important part of how I handle OEM projects.

If a standard platform already solves 80 or 90 percent of the requirement, I normally start there. I may change shelf spacing, add a holder, replace the monitor arm, adjust the power system, or change some structural parts.

This usually gives the customer a faster and more predictable project.

A fully new design makes more sense when the existing structure creates too many compromises. This may happen when the customer needs a very different base, a special column, custom enclosures, an unusual mounting system, or a completely different equipment layout.

I also consider quantity.

A major new structure for one cart has a very different business case from a design that will be used for repeated OEM orders. For long-term projects, keeping a confirmed drawing and configuration also helps maintain consistency from one batch to the next.

Customization does not mean changing everything. Good customization means changing the parts that actually need to change.

Long email chains often begin because the first message does not contain enough technical information. A few clear details can save a surprising amount of time.

For a custom endoscopy cart project, I recommend sending the equipment list, device dimensions and weight, monitor specifications, system photos, required accessories, power standard, expected quantity, and any reference cart or drawing you already have.

A Simple Starting Package Is Usually Enough

I do not expect a customer to prepare a complete engineering document before contacting me.

A simple Excel equipment list, several phone photos, and a few dimensions are often enough for me to begin evaluating the project.

If you already have a cart that you want to improve, photos are useful. I especially like to see the front, rear, sides, base, monitor mounting point, shelf structure, and accessory positions.

If the project is still at an early stage, I can work from the equipment itself.
